MISC: An Ode to Common Things

Common things in our mundane routine are never glorified. While we use them, they are often overlooked and rarely appreciated. But if we take a closer look, we’ll be able to see them in a new light — allowing us to see wonder in the ordinary.

*MISC**. is a project that aims to relook and discover beauty in the ordinary, and to also evoke a different outlook of our surroundings*. Through a documentation of interactions with the objects, it offers insights on the importance of seemingly insignificant things, serving as a reminder for us to slow down and live each day mindfully.

01/ MISC: An Ode to Spoon (common things)

Why a spoon? Something as mundane and indifferent plays such a frequent role in our daily lives. Other than its primary purpose of bringing food into our mouths, it is rather forgotten in our everyday as life goes by. It’s a symbol of nourishment, and giving, showcasing the emphathetic aspect our lives. A humble thinking like that brings a whole new level of exploration, discovery and dimension of the mighty spoon.

02/ MISC: An Ode to Salt (common things)

Whenever salt is brought to conversations, the very first thing that most of us represent salt is that white granular seasoning found in saltshakers in virtually every dining table. It is that, surely, but it is far more. It actually tells the history of the world, the generations that worked to make salt present for everyone. You may be surprised to learn that your very life is dependant on sodium chloride, this common household staple.

At some point, we would all have the memory of our mother, grandmother, or someone special in our life standing in the kitchen preparing a meal. And, without much guessing, they are standing in front of a chopping board. Despite it being something so central to the art of cooking, the chopping board is often an overlooked equipment. This kitchen workhorse and lifelong companion, does the ubiquity of the chopping board means that we should just neglect them?
